Fasciola hepatica, also known as the common liver fluke or sheep liver fluke, is a parasitic trematode (fluke or flatworm, a type of helminth) of the class Trematoda, phylum Platyhelminthes. It infects the livers of various mammals, including humans. The young worms move through the intestinal wall, the abdominal cavity, and the liver tissue, into the bile ducts, where they develop into mature adult flukes that produce eggs. The pathology typically is most pronounced in the bile ducts and liver. Fasciola infection is both treatable and preventable.

As adult Fasciola hepatica lives in the liver and bile ducts of sheep as an endoparasite, it is very well adapted for its parasitic mode of life. In fact, on one hand adult fluke exhibits certain adaptive features and on the other a number of adaptive features may also be .
